Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) occurs when the soft tissue in a person’s throat repeatedly collapses and blocks the airway during sleep.
When this occurs the individual wakes up gasping for air. You can imagine how tired you would feel if this happened to you many times per hour. With constant arousals from sleep fragmentation do not allow the important deep and dream sleep to occur. This unrefreshing sleep leads to excessive daytime sleepiness and serious health consequences.
Treating sleep apnea can lead to consistent, quality sleep and help alleviate related health problems, such as:
- Increased risk of heart attack
- Chest pain
- Interrupted breathing
- High blood pressure
- Persistent tiredness
- Weight gain
- Poor attention
- Diminished productivity
- Sudden death
